Throughout history, the black cat has been surrounded by symbolism and contradictory meaning.

British and Irish superstitions dating back to the Middle Ages, associate black cats with witches and spells, and even to this day they still have many superstitions attached to them. Sadly, black cats are less likely to be adopted from a shelter than cats of other colours.

In some cultures however, black cats are thought to be spiritual guardians that bring protection and good luck.  They were considered divine symbols by the Egyptians and in Greek Mythology.  The Egyptians held cats (including black cats) in high esteem, and to kill one was considered a capital crime.
